The Marie Residency is a tribute to the life of Marie Brandolini (7.4.1963–30.5.2013), daughter of Béatrice Rosenberg de Rothschild. Marie was an accomplished artist who worked as a glass designer in the city of Murano in northern Italy. Her love and enjoyment of literature crossed genres and cultures. Marie made her home in Venice, but visited Jerusalem quite often and recognized its importance to her family. The Marie Residency program invites writers to Jerusalem and Venice for extended stays in both cities and aspires to grant them time to work, present public lectures, and deeply experience each of the cities.

The participants in the 2017 Marie Residency are Maira Kalman and Etgar Keret. Mishkenot Sha’ananim has offered them the opportunity to embark on a journey in the spirit of Mark Twain’s Innocents Abroad. They will set out on an illustrated travel adventure throughout Israel, visiting unusual places and meeting extraordinary people. Following this journey, they will create a collaborative work that will feature texts by Keret and illustrations by Kalman
